Condé Nast Traveler: Marrakech Magic Theater

Reviewed by Kimberley Lovato for Condé Nast Traveler

What's the vibe of the place?

Step off the busy streets near Union Square and make your way downstairs and into the Oasis Lounge, a former speakeasy with Moroccan tile, velvet banquettes, and flickering lanterns adjacent to the 35-seat jewel box theater. Performances take place on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, with additional shows on holidays and throughout December.

What kinds of events can we see here?

Each evening is full of laughs and nonstop how-did-he-do-it moments that stick with you long after you leave thanks to the mesmerizing (and mind-boggling) talents of mentalist and magician Jay Alexander, who performs exclusively at the Marrakech Magic Theater. A little bit Broadway, a little bit Vegas, a little bit comedy club, Alexander's show begins in the lounge with close-up magic and sleight-of-hand right before your unbelieving eyes.

But the main event takes place in the adjacent theater. With Alexander on stage, the interactive performance pulls guests onto the stage to become part of number games, mind reading, human lie detector feats, and extraordinary stunts of mind-bending magic. Even skeptics will be convinced that magic is real!

    How are the seats?

Because this is a tiny theater, there are no bad views, sharp rakes, or cramped spaces. It's like watching a show in your 'home theater'.

    Good for kids?

This show is not suitable for toddlers or infants, but children 12 and up will love it.

    What makes this place special?

Jay Alexander's performance is one-of-a-kind and can only be seen at the Marrakech Magic Theater, unless you hire him for your private corporate event. He's performed for the late Robin Williams, Bono, the Rolling Stones, among others. He's also appeared on Today and Good Morning America, but his complete show can only be seen at this theater in San Francisco.

    Who is this best for?

Adults and older kids and teens looking for a different night out in San Francisco, those who appreciate a good laugh, even magic skeptics are welcome. Everyone will leave with more questions than answers, cheeks that hurt from laughing so hard, and great memories of one of San Francisco's most unique nights out.
