    Houdini: The Master of Escape

    March 24, 1874 – October 31, 1926

Harry Houdini (born Ehrich Weiss; March 24, 1874 – October 31, 1926) was a Hungarian-born magician and stunt performer, noted for his sensational escape acts. He first attracted notice in vaudeville in the US and then as "Harry Handcuff Houdini" on a tour of Europe, where he challenged police forces to keep him locked up.

Soon he extended his repertoire to include chains, ropes slung from skyscrapers, straitjackets under water, and having to hold his breath inside a sealed milk can. His show business savvy was not only as a great magician and escape artist, but as one of the greatest creators of marketing and publicity stunts.

The Art of the Publicity Stunt

Houdini was a master of self-promotion long before the age of social media. He would arrive in a new city and immediately challenge the local police to restrain him — often escaping from their best handcuffs, jail cells, and locked wagons in full view of the press. These stunts generated front-page newspaper coverage in every city he visited, turning him into the most famous entertainer in the world.

    Beyond the Escapes

While Houdini is best remembered for his death-defying escapes, he was also a skilled close-up magician, a pioneer of aviation (he was one of the first people to fly a plane in Australia), a movie star, and a passionate debunker of fraudulent spirit mediums. In his later years, he waged a very public war against phony psychics and séance charlatans, using his knowledge of magic to expose their tricks.

Houdini died on October 31, 1926 — Halloween night — at the age of 52. His name remains synonymous with escape, mystery, and the impossible. More than any other performer in history, Houdini proved that magic is not just about tricks — it's about the power of a story, the thrill of danger, and the eternal human desire to believe that the impossible might just be possible.
